U.S. Infant, International, & Waiting Child Adoption Orientation
For persons interested in learning about adopting infants and older children in the United States or adopting children from foreign countries. Information will be shared about the advantages, risks and opportunities of all types of adoption. Specific information will be shared about our own Parental Placement (open adoption) program, as well as information about how we can assist in the adoption of children from anywhere in the world.

CONSULTATION SERVICES

Placement Program Consultation: For persons interested in exploring all of their options in a one-on-one consultation with our Executive Director or Placement Director. There is a $60/hour fee for this service. This service can take the place of our free orientation meeting and there is no obligation.

Waiting Child Consultation: For persons interested in learning about children ages 9 and older who are waiting for an adoptive family and children for whom we are recruiting adoptive families. Learn about the children, ways you can help a waiting child and the adoption process.

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS

Please read below for a description of educational workshops offered to the public and to our clients. Families in the home study assessment process are required to attend the Adoption, Identity, & Attachment class before completing their home study process. Please see the schedule and speak with your social worker about additional courses specific to your type of adoption.

If you are a Placement Program client of coordinators2inc, the cost of your workshop is included in your service fees. Adoptive Family Support Program clients may attend any workshop for free.

For the general public, a $30 donation per person will be requested to be paid at the workshop via check or cash.

You must call coordinators2inc @ (804) 354-1881 to register for workshops at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled date. A minimum of 5 people are needed in order to proceed with any of these workshops. We will close registration once 25 people are pre-registered. All others will be asked to register for the next scheduled meeting.

Workshops listed are subject to change and/or cancellation. Be sure to call and verify that the workshop you wish to attend is being held as planned and that you are registered.

 
 

Adoption, Identity, & Attachment

FOR ALL FAMILIES ADOPTING THROUGH COORDINATORS2INC

Required of all Coordinators2inc clients during the Home Study process. This workshop is a day long, intensive overview of the significant factors to consider in a successful adoptive family experience. All workshops are held on Saturdays from 10:00-3:00 including breaks (lunch is on your own or bring your own).

Effective Parenting

FOR OUR FAMILIES ADOPTING THROUGH OUR WAITING CHILD PROGRAM

Required of all families adopting through our Waiting Child program during the home study process. This training is offered to families who are adopting children with histories of trauma, abuse, and neglect. This workshop will explore alternate techniques to meeting children's needs and understanding the issues behind their children's behaviors. For any family considering adoption from another country and/or child of a different race, please complete he online courses "Conspicuous Families" through Adoption Learning Partners www.adoptionlearningpartners.org. Turn in your certificate to your home study social worker. Families are responsible for the fee associated with taking this course and receiving a certificate.


 

If you are adopting internationally from a Hague Convention country, you will need to comply with Hague Accreditation requirements of a minimum of 10 hours of training DURING THE HOME STUDY PROCESS. You will need to supplement our training courses with additional training online or via another resource. There is also a requirement for specific training regarding Medical Issues in International Adoption. Please check with your PLACING agency for suggested trainings and/or check these online courses that meet Hague Requirements:

SUPPORT GROUPS
Birth Parent & Adult Adoptee

This support group is free and available to any adult adoptee or any parent who has placed a child for adoption regardless of when, how or with another agency. This group is also open and available to anyone contemplating adoption for their child as an opportunity to speak with others who have lived the experience. Extended family members are also welcome to attend. The group is led by a social worker, who is also a birth mother and an adoptee.

"We Are Family" Adoptive Parent Virtual Online Support Group
"We Are Family" is a virtual online support group for adoptive families, created for the purpose of offering families a forum for sharing the joys and challenges that are unique to adoptive families and disseminating information on a wide range of issues that impact adoptive families.
 

To join please follow these steps:

3. Sign into Yahoo! Or click on "Sign Up" to create a Yahoo! ID (this is free)

Our site moderator will approve each membership request. You may check the support group site to see when your membership has been approved and to browse the site, which we strongly encourage on a regular basis. You will find in the Links and Files sections, information on adoptive parenting, attachment, and cultural resources. On the Calendar, you will find we have listed event information for various other local support groups that may be of interest to your family. The Modern Family: An education/support group for gay/lesbian/bisexual adoptive parents (fee based group)
Join Lynne Edwards and Sara Snowden for our first six week educational support group for gay, lesbian and bisexual adoptive parents. Families will explore the strengths of gay and lesbian families, the impact of secrecy on family relationships and intimacy, talking about adoption and sexual orientation, managing being perceived as different and other issues unique to GLB adoption.  Lynne is an adoptee and family therapist specializing in attachment work with both gay and straight adoptive families.  She has been with coordinators2inc for the past 22 years. Sara is a social worker and adoptive parent, who with her partner of 15 years, persevered through several obstacles to adopt Maya 5 years ago.

The cost is $15 per session per person or $25 per session per couple.  All sessions will be held in Richmond. The specific location of this workshop is to be announced.  Call Lynne Edwards at 804-221-4658 for more information. Register by calling 804-354-1881.
