WAITING CHILD ADOPTION - HOW TO GET STARTED |
||||||||||
The home study is a mutual educational process during which families learn about the uniqueness of adoptive parenting and we learn about how a family's life experiences have prepared them for adoptive parenting. Don’t worry the process often sounds overwhelming but it is a great learning experience and is designed to educate prospective adoptive families about the children who are waiting. Once you have submitted an application you will be assigned a home study worker who will assist you through the process of adopting. The family attends an Orientation Session and six group meetings and completes one on-line training class. The family will be provided reading materials and will meet with their assigned social worker at least 3 times, with one visit being in the family's home. The family will share information with the worker that will help the worker and family decide the type of child(ren) that a family can best parent. The worker will provide information to the family about how children come into care, the needs of the children that parents must meet, how children have learned from their past about how to get their needs met, parenting techniques and supportive services to help the family after placement. Once the family has completed all the meetings and trainings, the social worker will write up a home study document that will describe the family and the type of child that this family could parent. This home study, along with photos of the family, will be sent to the agency that holds custody of children. We believe the home study process is an opportunity to educate and assist families as they prepare to become adoptive parents, for every family is a potentially valuable resource for one of our children.
